Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy are stranded on a strange island where an ancient villain named Lyric plans to trade living nature for a robot army. The four heroes each bring their own skills to the journey, from Knuckles climbing to Amy hammer work. It is a slower and more adventurous take on Sonic than the classic speed focused games.

You swap between heroes to solve puzzles, open paths and fight robotic enemies in small arenas. Enerbeam tethers link characters to swing across gaps, pull switches and expose weak points in boss battles. Speed sections break up the exploring with classic Sonic dashing through crumbling routes. Playing with a friend in co op suits the teamwork theme nicely. It is a curious chapter in Sonic history that fans of the cartoon series will especially enjoy exploring. The sound design deserves a mention too, with music and effects that quietly lift every scene they touch.
