Monster Hunter Stories retells the Monster Hunter world from a kinder angle. In Hakum Village, people do not hunt monsters. They form bonds with them, raise them from eggs and ride them as partners called Monsties. You play a young Rider whose village is attacked by a monster gripped by the Black Blight, a sickness spreading across the land. With your Felyne friend Navirou and a Rathalos you raise yourself, you set out to learn the truth behind the blight and the legend of the first Rider.

Battles are turn based and built around a simple triangle of power, speed and technique attacks, where reading your enemy matters more than raw strength. Winning a round lets you and your Monstie strike together, and a full bond meter unlocks spectacular riding attacks. Exploration rewards curiosity, since monster dens hide eggs with different patterns and genes that pass skills between Monsties in the rite of channeling.
