Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse opens with the half genie hero of Sequin Land in a tough spot, having lost her magic at the end of the previous adventure. When her old enemy Risky Boots warns that the Pirate Master is returning, the two rivals agree to work together. Shantae must travel across islands, reclaim cursed pirate gear and stop a villain who once ruled the seas. The writing is funny and warm, with a cast that fans of the series know and love.

Without her dances, Shantae relies on pirate items this time, and each one opens new paths. A flintlock pistol shoots switches from far away, a scimitar cuts through blocks, a cannon gives an extra jump in mid air and a sail hat lets her glide across long gaps. Islands act as large areas full of secrets, dungeons and lively towns, and finding heart squids and dark magic rewards careful explorers. The pixel art is rich and the pace stays brisk from start to finish.
