Unlucky Mage opens with Jasper, a gifted young wizard, accused of a crime he did not commit. Thrown into prison and facing execution, he escapes with help from a mysterious girl and becomes a fugitive in a tense kingdom. The story follows his flight across towns and wild lands while soldiers hunt him and old friends doubt him. It has the feel of a classic handheld role playing game, with a clear hook and a hero easy to root for.

Battles are turn based and brisk, built around Jasper and the partners who join his escape. A neat formation system lets allies stationed behind the front line share benefits and support the fight, which adds thought to simple commands. Towns offer gear, gossip and side paths, and the difficulty stays welcoming for newer players while still giving veterans numbers to tune.
