Project X Zone 2 brings back the giant crossover party with an even wider guest list and a new threat bending time and space. Mysterious golden chains have appeared across worlds, and the Shinra organisation sends its agents to investigate, gathering fighters from Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Yakuza, Fire Emblem and many more. Seeing Chrom and Lucina trade blows alongside Segata Sanshiro is the kind of joyful nonsense only this series can deliver.

The tactical battles refine the first games systems, with pair units attacking in flashy timed sequences where smart button choices build cross hits and charge your special gauge. Charge attacks, counters on the enemy turn and the new mirage cancel skill give skilled players more control, and stages throw in varied goals beyond clearing the field. Between fights, the banter is half the fun, full of in jokes that reward fans of each series on show.

There is one important catch for new players today. The Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS closed in March 2023, so new digital purchases are no longer possible on the system.
